Lithium Ion batteries are given a bad rap when in fact they’re much safer than most people think. This misconception about Lithium Ion batteries dissuades people from buying electric vehicles and investing in battery improvements. This is a huge problem for the electronics industry because most of these incidents involving Lithium Ion battery fires are caused by manufacturing defects and poor design standards that could have been avoided.
Stories of Teslas and other electric vehicles catching on fire leads many to believe that Lithium Ion batteries are not safe. Yet, as most electric vehicles are new in the market, accidents are more heavily reported by the media. Conversely, fires with gas cars happen much more often. Ironically, these accidents involving gas automobile fires are rarely reported on because they’re much more common. A gas car is six times more likely to catch on fire than a Tesla car. I go on to discuss more of the myths and rumors about battery fires in the following video.
